‘Avengers: Infinity War’ TV Spot Breakdown: New Details From The Super Bowl Spot

The Avengers assembled once again last night. And though the latest Avengers: Infinity War TV spot was only 30 seconds long, there was a horde of new details unveiled about the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film. From new tech to new allies and new outfits: the world’s mightiest heroes won’t go up against Thanos alone.

You can take a look at our in-depth breakdown of the first Avengers: Infinity War trailer here, but for now, here are a few new revelations that we gleaned from last night’s Avengers Infinity War Super Bowl TV spot.

Peter Parker aka Spider-Man (Tom Holland) finally makes an appearance alongside the rest of the Avengers heavy hitters, Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch). The three of them are mask- and helmet-less, gazing at some unknown entity that is emitting a blue-ish light. This most likely takes place after Spidey attempts to tackle the ominous portal floating above New York City, and after Tony Stark and Stephen Strange are confronted with the screaming crowds and city-wide destruction left by Thanos’ entrance. They could feasibly be staring at The Mad Titan himself, but I get the feeling that Tony and Stephen’s calm looks of bemused concern and Peter Parker’s wide-eyed awe means that they are meeting the Guardians of the Galaxy for the first time.

Here we get a longer glimpse at Vision and Wanda Maximoff’s scene (the Scarlet Vision ship forever) where it looks like Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) is drawing the power out of Vision’s Mind Stone. This fits, as it was the Mind Stone that initially gave Wanda her powers in Age of Ultron. In my initial breakdown, I assumed that Vision had shapeshifted to take on a human form, but it looks like he can only transform into Paul Bettany with Wanda’s help.

Here we see the immediate aftermath of Thor literally crash-landing into the Guardians’ ship. They’re teaming up! Probably in search of the Asgardian ship, which had just been attacked by a huge craft manned by Thanos and/or his underlings, the Black Order. Take a look at teenage Groot sulkily ignoring the action by looking at his phone.

It seems like Spidey has bitten off more than he can chew by taking on Thanos’ portal head-on. The portal seems to have launched skyward, hurtling into space, with Spider-Man holding on for dear life. In desperation, Spider-Man yanks his mask off, though I can’t imagine how that would help him as his oxygen levels deplete dangerously. Tony probably didn’t build in protections for space travel, but is that really a good idea, Peter?

Emo Cap and Black Widow are back in town, and they’ve got an injured Vision in tow, clutching his side. It must be a serious injury for a shapeshifting android to retain it long enough to hurt him — the only person we’ve seen so far who can stand up to Vision is Scarlet Witch, and even then she was only able to restrain him. So I imagine that this is post-Thanos or Black Order tussle, and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) rolled in to rescue Vision. The background looks like any generic sleek office building, but it does look vaguely similar to the U.N. building in Vienna where the Avengers first fractured in Captain America: Civil War.

Speaking of Captain America: Civil War, it looks like Steve has gotten a brand new shield, replacing the one that he despondently dropped at the end of his life-or-death fight with Tony Stark. Made from Wakandan technology, the shield is much more slender and utilitarian than his iconic red, white, and blue shield. But it goes with Cap’s whole new lumberjack assassin look, in which his beard is dark, but his attitude is darker.

Tony Stark has been continually upgrading his suits since Mark 1 first emerged from a cave in 2008, and he’s not slacking when it comes to the big universe-upending battle. It looks like Tony has been dabbling in nano-technology in Avengers: Infinity War, with the Iron Man technology residing in the sunglasses we’ve seen Tony with in the last trailer. This solidifies previous reports that Iron Man’s latest armor is his famous Prime Armor, Tony’s most sophisticated armor yet. The armor boasts built-in nanotech that allows Tony to morph the armor at will, transforming into any of his old suit models and even sprouting weapons like phasma cannons and swords.

Avengers: Infinity War arrives in theaters on May 4, 2018.

As the Avengers and their allies have continued to protect the world from threats too large for any one hero to handle, a new danger has emerged from the cosmic shadows: Thanos. A despot of intergalactic infamy, his goal is to collect all six Infinity Stones, artifacts of unimaginable power, and use them to inflict his twisted will on all of reality. Everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment – the fate of Earth and existence itself has never been more uncertain.
