‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ is “Allowed To Have A Lot More Fun,” Says Donald Glover
If the previous Star Wars movies weren’t fun enough for you, wait until you get a load of Solo: A Star Wars Story. Actor Donald Glover (who should be getting his own Lando Calrissian spin-off any second now) implies that the upcoming spin-off could be the most fun Star Wars movie yet, largely because the story is free from the burden of expectation. Read Glover’s comments below.
Donald Glover’s Solo Comment
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight (via BleedingCool), Glover was asked how Solo: A Star Wars Story will be tonally different than the other films in the franchise:
“I think it’s just a lot more fun. All the Star Wars’ are really fun, but I think this movie – we know what’s gonna happen. We know they’re not gonna die. We know, kind of, what happens, but how we got there is, I guess, the crux of it. So, we’re allowed to have a lot more fun than, I think, in the other movies, where you have to deal with a lot of lineage and what’s going to happen. I think this movie’s just a fun summer film. I’m really excited about it. It’s really cool.”
Before original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were booted from the movie, Glover’s co-star Woody Harrelson was hyping Solo as “the best” Star Wars movie yet, but obviously a lot has happened since then. It’s probably a wise move to shift expectations from “best” to “more fun.”
What’s the Most Fun Star Wars Movie So Far?
But will Solo be the most fun Star Wars film yet? What would it have to dethrone in order to accomplish that goal? As Glover says, all of the movies have a sense of fun and adventure to them, but what’s currently in the top spot?
Despite the onslaught of comments this will likely incite, I’m going to remove the prequels from contention. Too much talk of trades and tariffs, and teen Anakin couldn’t have fun if he tried. Rogue One seems a little too fatalistic to take the top prize in this category, so let’s kick that one out, too. Empire’s ending looms so large that I feel like it’s probably out of the running, and as much as I love both the original Star Wars and The Force Awakens, any movie in which a whole planet (or more, in the case of TFA) is destroyed…well, it just doesn’t feel right to give that the “most fun” award. And while I truly adore The Last Jedi, even I must admit that the Canto Bight stuff doesn’t work as well as it could, and that film is so intense that that section is essentially the movie’s only opportunity for fun.
So by process of elimination, could Return of the Jedi actually be the most fun Star Wars movie that currently exists? It’s certainly not the best, or remotely close to being my favorite of the bunch, but is it the most fun?
I’m turning this discussion over to you. Hash it out in the comments below, because I know you all have an opinion about this.
