‘Star Wars’ Comic Shows the First Delightful Meeting Between Rose and Poe Dameron

When we first meet Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran) in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, she is immediately established as the movie’s everywoman — a spunky Resistance underling who believes in fighting for the cause above all else, except for perhaps the occasional fangirl moment when she meets her heroes.

We see that when she first meets Finn (John Boyega) who, admittedly, kind of stumbled into the hero role in The Force Awakens. But we see no such reaction to the dashing, starfighter pilot Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) — maybe because they were in a tense life-or-death situation, or maybe because he was tangentially responsible for her sister Paige Tico’s death. In reality, according to a new Star Wars comic book, it’s because they had already met.

Spoiler warning: This article reveals plot points from Star Wars Forces of Destiny: Rose & Paige.

The fifth and final Star Wars: Forces of Destiny comic from IDW was released this week, and it reveals the backstory of Rose and Paige when they first join the crew of Raddus, the Resistance’s flagship. The two sisters sadly didn’t share any screen time in Last Jedi, but the comic dives into their close relationship.

As the two of them learn the ropes, Rose bumps into Poe Dameron and gives us that starstruck reaction we were waiting for.

Rose is studying up on Paige’s cruiser when Poe suddenly pops up behind her, giving her an inspirational speech on bathrooms and work ethic before quickly skedaddling and leaving behind a flustered Rose. “I can’t believe I just met THE Poe Dameron,” Rose exlaims to herself. Same, girl. Same.

The comic by Delilah S. Dawson (Star Wars: Phasma) and illustrator Nicoletta Baldari (Frozen), gives the most in-depth look at the story of Rose and Paige, which remains mostly implied onscreen. Dawson, who was commissioned to write the prequel comic book in 2016, called herself “one of the only people in the world who knew the story of the Tico sisters.” Dawson told StarWars.com that it made watching Paige’s fate in Last Jedi so much harder:

“When I saw Paige onscreen, I was completely gut-punched, in part because I knew her character so well already. It was an honor to write about Rose and Paige. To me, they’re the heart of what the Resistance means: ordinary people willing to make sacrifices in the hopes that other people and planets won’t have to suffer.”
