The Morning Watch: New Perspective in Horror from ‘Get Out’, THR’s Cinematographers Round Table

Get Out Video Essay

The Morning Watch is a recurring feature that highlights a handful of noteworthy videos from around the web. They could be video essays, fanmade productions, featurettes, short films, hilarious sketches, or just anything that has to do with our favorite movies and TV shows.

In this edition, watch a video essay exploring how Get Out does for horror what some of the most innovative films in the genre have done. Plus, check out the full rountable discussion between the buzzed about cinematographers from this awards season, and watch a trailer mash-up of Blades of Glory and I, Tonya.

First up, Lessons from a Screenplay delivers a new video essay before the Oscars to highlight how Get Out delivers a new perspective in horror by simply telling us the story through the eyes of a black protagonist. That character choice alone makes all the difference in the lead character of Jordan Peele’s psychological thriller thinking that something isn’t quite right during his visit to his white girlfriend’s house.

Next up, The Hollywood Reporter hosted another one of their roundtable discussions, this time with cinematographers Janus Kaminski (The Post), Roger Deakins (Blade Runner 2049), Robert Elswit (Suburbicon), Rachel Morrison (Mudbound), Dan Laustsen (The Shape of Water), and Hoyte van Hoytema (Dunkirk).

Finally, Funny or Die creates a new rivalry by mashing up footage of the Will Ferrell ice skating comedy Blades of Glory with the dark comedic biopic I, Tonya starring Margot Robbie. There’s no way Chazz Michael Michaels is putting up with Tonya Harding’s bullshit.
