Watch the Full ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Documentary Short ‘The Force of Sound’ Right Now
The home video release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be chock full of special features that dive into the making of the movie. Not only is director Rian Johnson providing commentary, but there will be a feature length documentary going behind the scenes of the film’s production. But since that won’t be available until next month, a new 26-minute documentary short about the sound design and sound mixing done for the film will have to hold us over.
ABC News was given extensive access to Skywalker Sound, and they’ve put together a fascinating and revealing documentary called The Force of Sound that dives into the creation of the sound effects for a movie that is literally out of this world in a galaxy far, far away. Want to know how the sounds of the Porgs were created? What do foley artists use to make the sound of BB-8 rolling on the ground? This is the documentary for you.

The documentary features extensive talking head time with the likes of Ren Klyce, sound designer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, as well as Matthew Wood, the supervising sound editor at Skywalker Ranch. They provided fascinating insight into the creation of the sounds that make us believe in the Star Wars universe as if it were a real place. They create the sounds of the creatures, settings, characters, weapons and everything that we love about this galaxy.
Porg Sounds and a Force Vacuum
Even more fantastic is all of the footage from this documentary that shows the foley artists working behind the scenes to create those sounds with anything and everything they can find. Some gloved hands softly hitting various metal tools are used to create the sound of Porgs kicking Luke Skywalker’s old lightsaber. Chicken squawks are sped up and manipulated to create the Porgs signature chatter after Rian Johnson said he wanted them to sound annoying but not too annoying. I never get tired of seeing how foley artists create all of the sounds we hear in a movie.
While there has been much debate about the introduction of the Force connection and communication between Rey and Kylo Ren, you probably didn’t think much about the sound design of those scenes. But Rian Johnson and Ren Klyce spent plenty of time figuring out how to make it sound like these scenes were contained in some kind of vacuum, from the dialogue to the sound of the environment around them.
There’s likely plenty more revelations to learn about the making of Star Wars: The Last Jedi when the latest chapter in the saga comes home. So make sure you pick it up when it arrives on digital download on March 13, 2018 and then on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD on March 27, 2018.
