Dave Filoni Explains Why ‘Rogue One’ Battle of Scarif Will Not Be In ‘Star Wars Rebels’ Finale
The Star Wars Rebels finale airs tonight, but if you were expecting the animated show’s conclusion to tie directly into the ending of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, think again. In a video interview, Rebels creator Dave Filoni offers up the reasoning behind not including the Rogue One Battle of Scarif in the Star Wars Rebels finale.
Star Wars Rebels is the hit animated Disney XD show set after the events of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and before and during events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, focusing on a group of rebels who unite aboard a freighter called the Ghost and engage in covert operations and face-off against characters like Darth Vader and Grand Admiral Thrawn. The Star Wars Rebels finale airs tonight, but if any audience members were hoping to see the Rogue One Battle of Scarif – the climactic battle in the film that virtually wipes out the entire cast of characters – it’s time for a reality check.
In a new video interview, Dave Filoni, one of the Rebels co-creators, confirms that we won’t see the Battle of Scarif in the finale. Filoni goes on to offer up some sound reasoning behind this decision. See for yourself.

As Filoni puts it, “That moment [the Battle of Scarif] isn’t significant for [Rebels main character] Ezra…it’s significant for the Rebel Alliance, but [Star Wars Rebels is] Ezra’s story…I didn’t think that end of our series should be the climactic battle [from another movie].”
Filoni goes on to say that if the entire Ghost crew from Rebels had been present during the Battle of Scarif, things would’ve turned out a lot differently in the film. As Filoni puts it, “If the whole Ghost crew is there, [the Rogue One characters would] get off that planet.” Filoni also adds that while it might’ve provided some fun fan service to feature the Scarif scenes, his intention was always to “keep [the connections] very vague and light…and keep them in the background.” He concludes, “It’s not in our face; it’s not contriving a plot point because it’s cool.”
Star Wars Rebels features Freddie Prinze Jr. as Kanan, Vanessa Marshall as Hera, Steve Blum as Zeb, Tiya Sircar as Sabine, Taylor Gray as Ezra, Dee Bradley Baker as Captain Rex, David Oyelowo as Kallus, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn as Governor Pryce, Lars Mikkelsen as Grand Admiral Thrawn and Warwick Davis as Rukh.
The Star Wars Rebels finale airs tonight, March 5, at 8:30pm ET on Disney XD and will be released on the DisneyNOW App (DisneyNOW.com) at 10:00pm ET.
