Rumor: Luke and Snoke May Share a Connection in ‘The Last Jedi’ Novelization
Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis) cut an ominous figure in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Scarred and disfigured, this character had managed to rise to power and amass a tyrannical army in the span of 30 years. That’s astonishing, even in a story as fantastical and far, far away as Star Wars. In the two years between Episode 7 and Episode 8, Snoke spawned countless theories and Reddit threads about who, exactly, he was.
So when fans sat down for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, they expected to see more of this tantalizing villain and his backstory. Unfortunately, that didn’t quite happen. But the official novelization of Last Jedi may explain a little more about who Snoke is. And it may connect to our first Star Wars hero, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill).
The official Last Jedi novelization, to which director Rian Johnson contributed, doesn’t hit shelves until March 6, but reports have already started surfacing about the book’s character and plot details. But one detail is of particular interest to Snoke fans (wherever you are).
Comic Book Movie has a report that suggests a connection between a young Snoke and Luke Skywalker. The outlet writes:
Apparently, Snoke once connected with a younger Luke Skywalker who was in the process of searching for Jedi lore, something we know is the case after playing the Star Wars Battlefront II video game. It’s not clear if this meeting took place in person or via the Force but it reportedly ended up giving Snoke a deep respect for the Jedi Master.
Snoke, meanwhile, was a gifted Force user since a young age and used that to see his dark future, something which presumably turned him against Luke Skywalker (after all, seeing that someone is going to be your enemy down the line is going to make you hate them).
The report also also claims that Snoke was so powerful that he could conceal his existence from the Emperor. This is how he was able to take control of the remains of the Galactic Empire and create the incredibly powerful First Order.
This is just a rumor for now, as there is no way to confirm these details until the novelization’s release. But it does partially explain how the First Order became so powerful in such a short range of years after the fall of the Empire.
Snoke’s potential backstory as an admirer-turned-enemy of Luke Skywalker is an intriguing, if tired, trope. It doesn’t quite explain exactly how Snoke is so powerful, but I guess we could find out once the novelization is officially released. That’s likely the only place we’ll get to see more of Snoke, after his pretty definitive death during Last Jedi. However, with Serkis hinting at a return, maybe that won’t be the case.
The Star Wars: The Last Jedi novelization will be released on March 6, 2018.
