Cool Stuff: Japanese-Style Prints of Hayao Miyazaki Films Will Spirit You Away
There’s nothing as magical as watching a Hayao Miyazaki film, and letting it transport you to a fantastical world where dragons soar and castles walk. But a Hayao Miyazaki print done in the style of Japanese woodblock prints may just come close.
For a limited time, Japanese woodblock-style prints of Studio Ghibli movies directed by the legendary anime filmmaker are available to purchase. But better snatch them up quick, because like a certain antique grandfather clock in Whisper of the Heart, at the stroke of midnight, they may disappear.
Artist Bill Mudron has lovingly created 12 prints of beloved Hayao Miyazaki films in the style of 20th-century Japanese woodblock artist Kawase Hasui, giving the fantastical stories a nostalgic, traditional sheen.
The prints, which are available in 10.5 x 15.25-inch offset prints on premium matte stock, depict iconic scenes and landscapes from some of Miyazaki’s most famous films, including My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Porco Rosso, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind, Howl’s Moving Castle, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, Ponyo, The Wind Rises, and even Miyazaki’s very first film, The Count of Cagliostro.
But each of the prints are almost devoid of people — a clear tribute to Hasui’s serene woodblock prints of nature and mundane townscapes — except for one: a print of Hayao Miyazaki himself outside of Studio Ghibli’s headquarters.
Here is Mudron’s description of is complete 12-print set, which you can purchase here.
Inspired by the works of Japanese print artist Kawase Hasui, this set of 12 prints bring to life scenes from 11 films directed by Hayao Miyazaki: My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Porco Rosso, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind, Howl’s Moving Castle, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, Ponyo and The Wind Rises, plus one print depicting Miyazaki-san himself and Studio Ghibli’s headquarters in Koganei, Japan.
The prints are also available in sets of six or as individual prints.
However, these prints are only available for a limited amount of time. Mudron is offering these prints for purchase until May 15 at midnight PST. You can find out more here.
