The Morning Watch: Wendy Looks Back at ‘Peter Pan’ 65 Years Later, The Chancla’s Origin in ‘Coco’ & More

Coco - Chancla Scene - Making of Peter Pan

The Morning Watch is a recurring feature that highlights a handful of noteworthy videos from around the web. They could be video essays, fanmade productions, featurettes, short films, hilarious sketches, or just anything that has to do with our favorite movies and TV shows.

In this edition, the voice actress behind Wendy in Disney’s classic Peter Pan reminisces about working on the movie 65 years later. Plus, find out the origin of the chancla that Miguel’s grandmother carries around in Pixar’s Coco, and watch a video essay about Futurama‘s masterful blend of humor and emotion with science and math.

Voice actress Kathryn Beaumont looks back (via SyFy) on her time spent working on the classic Disney adaptation of Peter Pan. Back then, she was not only the voice of the character, but a model for animators to reference for the film, which meant she had to be hoisted up on a wire harness to help with the flying sequences.

If you thought it was a little strange that Miguel’s grandmother in Coco was so readily prepared to use her sandal as a way of punishing her grandson, that’s something that is actually based in Hispanic culture. That specific kind of shoe is referred to as a chancla, and many kids feared the wrath of their grandmother and mother when they would wield it.

Finally, a video essay looks at how Futurama stood out with a unique comedic approach to science and math. Producer David X. Cohen says, “There’s not a lot of things in that category, comedy-science fiction. There weren’t a lot of role models. The more seriously we took the science and the science fiction elements, the better the comedy worked. We’d have a serious set-up, and then the character’s petty concerns played against the fate of the universe and billions of years of history.” Watch the full video essay for more.
