‘Star Wars Episode 9’ Promo Images Reveal Character Names, New Ships, New Stormtroopers & More
Since we’ve yet to see anything significant from Star Wars Episode 9, we’ll have to take what we can get from the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is the internet. And today brought a leak of details and information thanks to a retail poster that features our first glimpse at a bunch of new characters, several new starships, new looks for Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega) and Poe (Oscar Isaac), and one perplexing detail about a classic character.
So without further adieu, let’s dive into some leaked Star Wars Episode 9 details, but beware of possible spoilers.
The information in question comes from Making Star Wars, who somehow came into possession of a leaked retail poster, the kind that you’d buy at Walmart. On top of that, they also got their hands on a sheet of character images that not only show off the new looks each character will have in the movie, but also the names of some new characters. We won’t post the images here since they’re leaked, unofficial images, but you can see them yourselves if you just can’t wait. But we’ll break down the revelations for you below.
The leaked retail poster itself is where the juiciest details come from. The image itself is unimpressive since it’s one of those posters that’s comprised entirely of a bunch of studio-shot promotional images of characters that have been Photoshopped together into a single poster. It’s a little lazy, but that’s how a lot of these retail posters look. But the character sheet has some interesting revelations too.
New Characters
On this poster, we get a glimpse of Naomi Ackie‘s new character Jannah. The poster doesn’t reveal much about her character other than the beige and brown wardrobe she’s wearing. However, Ackie’s character has been rumored to be the daughter of Lando Calrissian. We have no idea if that’s true or not yet, but it should be noted that she does have a sort of cape on, albeit one that doesn’t looks as stylish or fancy as Lando might have. Another image of the character features her holding a bow and arrow. We’re not sure how handy that’s going to be in a fight against laser blasts, but she looks like a badass warrior.
Another new character appearing on the poster is named Zorii, believed to be Keri Russell‘s character. She’s wearing a helmet that looks like a cross between The Rocketeer and an Olympic cycling helmet. She’s wearing a body suit that’s a burgundy sort of color with some gold arm accents, tall brown boots, and a typical gun holster belt. Our first instinct is that this is a new bounty hunter character. However, it appears there might be some disrepancies between how the character looks on the retail poster and how she looks on an accompanying character sheet, specifically with the helmet, though it could just be due to the angle.
Also situated on the poster is BB-8’s new droid buddy that we heard about not too long ago. Reportedly the little guy’s name is D.O., and he looks just as he was initial described with a shape that is somewhat like a megaphone.
Finally, there’s a prominently featured new alien next to Finn on the retail poster, but no details are given about that character. Making Star Wars does note that the alien featured on the retail poster differs greatly from the one used on set. We’re assuming this isn’t just a case of there being two different aliens, but rather a change in design in post-production. After all, there’s likely only one alien character prominent enough to be on a poster like this, so mixing them up wouldn’t be likely.
The Knights of Ren and Red Stormtroopers
The leaked poster also features an image of the Knights of Ren situated in a group over the shoulder of Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). Also appearing prominently on the poster is an army of red armored Stormtroopers. Supposedly these new Stormtroopers report specifically to the Knights of Ren and Kylo himself. However, Making Star Wars notes that the images of these characters used in this poster do not appear to be the final versions they’ve heard about. That’s our biggest hint that this leaked poster isn’t the final version of a poster we’ll see in stores, but perhaps an earlier mock-up with some details that may be different in the end.
New Ships
The poster also features some new Resistance starships flying around, including the return of Y-Wings and A-Wings, not to mention a red-orange X-Wing. Meanwhile, on the Resistance side, we’ve got a new TIE Fighter, which could be a new ship altogether, or maybe just an updated version of the TIE Interceptor.
Returning Characters
As for the returning characters, Rey, Finn, and Poe are all on the poster, each with a new wardrobe. Rey’s wearing a white outfit while Finn is looking a bit more like Han Solo, wearing a beige vest with some navy blue pants that have an orange stripe down the side of them. Poe looks more like he came from an adaptation of Uncharted, wearing black boots, dark brown pants, and a cream colored shirt with a light scarf around his neck.
Kylo Ren is back too, and just as we heard before, the helmet is back on his head. However, you can see the cracks from where it was broken previously and the rumored red crystalline material that he used to piece it back together. Otherwise, he looks just like Kylo Ren, and he’s holding his lightsaber upside down in a cool warrior stance.
Chewbacca is there lingering in the background too, just looking on at all the heroes who are getting the spotlight instead. But a couple of Chewbacca’s signature props have been strapped onto another character, and we’re not sure why.
Oddly enough, neither Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams) or General Leia (Carrie Fisher) are featured on the retail poster. The exclusion of Lando Calrissian seems odd since there’s an image of him on the character sheet, showing him wearing a yellow shirt not unlike the one Donald Glover wore in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Of course, he still has a stylish cape, but now he walks with a cane in his older years. But maybe Lando’s role isn’t big enough to be on the poster. That doesn’t explain Leia’s absence, but since this poster is comprised mostly of new promotional images shot in a studio somewhere and Photoshopped together, that’s probably why they don’t have a good image of her to use here.
What the Hell, C-3PO?
In the retail poster, for some reason, C-3PO is holding Chewbacca’s bowcaster, and he’s also strapped with the bandolier that’s usually draped over his shoulder and body. If you look close, he’s also holding Rey’s staff as well. That might seem weird, but this exact detail was leaked sometime before, albeit without any context for why or how this happens. This sounds like it could lead to some prequel-style C-3PO shenanigans that I’m not necessarily onboard for, but we’ll wait to see how it plays out.
***
With Star Wars Celebration around the corner, we’re bound to start getting more leaks like this, especially with the first trailer almost undoubtedly debuting at the convention, along with the movie’s title. This was enough to whet our appetite for now, but it also raises a lot more questions about exactly what’s going on in the story.
