The Sky is Pink Movie Review – A True Story Painted with Make-Believe Strokes

 

The Sky is Pink makes for a light-hearted watch given the treatment of the story and the way it is narrated by Aisha Chaudhary (played by ‘Zaira Wasim’), who is diagnosed with the rare illness – Severe Combined Immunodeficieny (SCID). The film is based on the true story of the Chaudhary family and for most part reflects on the relationship of the parents here – Niren and Aditi Chaudhary (played by Farhan Akhtar and Priyanka Chopra respectively) and how their marriage didn’t end up in a divorce, which stands an 80% chance in such cases.

Shonali Bose who last directed the remarkable ‘Margarita With a Straw’ does a good job in telling the story in an entertaining way along with co-writer Juhi Chaturvedi. They both take a non-linear approach as they acknowledge the fact that the audience knows how the story is going to end.

Nonetheless Bose along with Juhi fail to strike a connection with the audience with its constantly divided attention between the parent’s relationship and the terminal illness. At many points, the film suddenly jumps between timelines and takes it audiences for a ride especially the rags to riches angle in the Chaudhary family and Aisha’s book written and published all in a week’s time.

Everything happens with such magic that the audience gives into the cheesiness of the characters rather than their actual story. Though the film takes many pages from the life of Chaudhary family, the screenplay does not give any space for Chaudhary family’s struggle with the external world and just focusses on their internal conflicts.

The film boasts of an ensemble cast and the everyone shines. Priyanka Chopra who returns to Bollywood after ‘Jai Gangaajal’ is remarkable as her co-star Farhan Akhtar. They show both Aditi’s and Niren’s vulnerability through the years and how their chemistry has evolved since ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ days. Zaira Wasim is in a complete avatar here and yet again proves her versatility. We just hope it is not her last film and she comes back for more. Rohit Saraf as Ishaan, the eldest child is poised and does a good job as a supporting actor.

The editing is good but the quirky narration eats up the emotional scenes in between especially the way death scene shifts to the funeral scene. The songs – ‘Dil Hi Toh Hai’ and ‘Zindagi’ find a worthy mention in the album.

The Sky Is Pink makes for a good weekend watch with the family and will not get you bored. Don’t expect an emotional roller-coaster here as you have to make-believe in many things for a film based on true story. Hope the film made similar impact as the actual video snippets of the Chaudhary family.
