‘The Peripheral’: ‘Midsommar’ Actor Jack Reynor Will Star In Jonathan Nolan & Lisa Joy Amazon Series

The Peripheral Cast Jack Reynor

Jack Reynor, AKA the guy who got stuffed into a bear at the end of Midsommar, has joined the cast of The Peripheral, a new Amazon series from Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa JoyThe Peripheral also stars Chloë Grace Moretz and Gary Carr and is based on a sci-fi novel from William Gibson, described as “a dazzling, hallucinatory glimpse into the fate of mankind — and what lies beyond.”

Deadline has revealed that Jack Reynor has joined the Peripheral cast alongside Chloë Grace Moretz and Gary Carr. The Amazon series comes from William Gibson’s book of the same name, and has Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy at the helm. The show follows “Flynne (Moretz) and her brother Burton (Reynor), a veteran of the United States Marine Corps’ elite Haptic Recon force [who] is hired for a security job which takes place in what he thinks is cyberspace. When Flynne temporarily takes his place, she witnesses something that might have been murder.”

That’s very vague sounding, so here’s the full synopsis of the book to shed more light on the matter:

Flynne Fisher lives down a country road, in a rural America where jobs are scarce, unless you count illegal drug manufacture, which she’s trying to avoid. Her brother Burton lives on money from the Veterans Administration, for neurological damage suffered in the Marines’ elite Haptic Recon unit. Flynne earns what she can by assembling product at the local 3D printshop. She made more as a combat scout in an online game, playing for a rich man, but she’s had to let the shooter games go.

Wilf Netherton lives in London, seventy-some years later, on the far side of decades of slow-motion apocalypse. Things are pretty good now, for the haves, and there aren’t many have-nots left. Wilf, a high-powered publicist and celebrity-minder, fancies himself a romantic misfit, in a society where reaching into the past is just another hobby.

Burton’s been moonlighting online, secretly working security in some game prototype, a virtual world that looks vaguely like London, but a lot weirder. He’s got Flynne taking over shifts, promised her the game’s not a shooter. Still, the crime she witnesses there is plenty bad.

Flynne and Wilf are about to meet one another. Her world will be altered utterly, irrevocably, and Wilf’s, for all its decadence and power, will learn that some of these third-world types from the past can be badass.

That certainly sounds metaphysical and labyrinthine enough to appeal to Nolan and Joy’s work on Westworld. Of course, Westworld also kind of went off the rails in subsequent seasons, so there’s no guarantee The Peripheral will go over well. Nolan and Joy will executive produce the series, with Vincenzo Natali directing, and Greg Plageman serving as executive producer and showrunner.
