‘Goosebumps 2’ Adds Wendi McLendon-Covey, Chris Parnell & More

Goosebumps 2 Cast

Yes, there’s still a Goosebumps sequel in the works. The film, which was at one point supposed to be called Goosebumps: Horrorland, is still slated to hit theaters this fall on October 12, 2018. But the film hasn’t started production yet. Columbia Pictures has just added three more cast members to the movie, which doesn’t seem to be bringing back any stars from the first film.

Goosebumps 2 already had Madison Iseman (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle), Jeremy Ray Taylor (IT), Ben O’Brien (Manchester by the Sea) and Caleel Harris (Think Like a Man) on board, but now some adult stars have joined the cast. Wendi McLendon-Covey (The Goldbergs), Ken Jeong (The Hangover) and Chris Parnell (Hot Rod) have been added to the sequel.

The latest Goosebumps 2 cast update comes from Variety, but unfortunately, they have no word on who anyone is playing in the movie. But we do know that no one from the original movie is returning, and that includes Jack Black as author R.L. Stine.

Wendi McLendon-Covey is best known for her role as the matriarch of The Goldbergs, and she’s easily one of the best characters on the show. Ken Jeong has played plenty of memorable, sometimes obnoxious supporting characters in films like The Hangover and Pain & Gain. Chris Parnell is a superb comedic character actor who started off on Saturday Night Live and has appeared in Hot Rod, Anchorman, 21 Jump Street and much more.

The original Goosebumps movie pulled from various books in the series, telling a story about the creations of R.L. Stine coming to life after a couple teens accidentally unleash them. It was an interesting enough premise, but it didn’t exactly deliver what I hoped. The script was sloppy, the story didn’t follow its own established rules, and Jack Black felt like he was starring in a completely different movie. So what will the sequel entail?

Is Goosebumps 2 Still About HorrorLand?

We really don’t know much of anything about Goosebumps 2. The tentative title has been rumored to be Goosebumps: Horrorland, which does provide a hint.

First, one of the original Goosebumps books was One Day at HorrorLand, which followed a family who accidentally stumbles upon a theme park that ends up terrifying them beyond belief. R.L. Stine followed it with the sequel Return to HorrorLand. But the HorrorLand title is also associated with a separate spin-off series of books R.L. Stine wrote. It was the first series to feature characters crossing over from the Goosebumps universe in the same continuing story.

There’s a chance the Goosebumps sequel could take a cue from the latter series and use several elements from a variety of books and bring them to the HorrorLand setting, but that’s just speculation on our part. Either way, it sounds like this will be somewhat of a departure of what we got from the first movie, and that’s probably good news.

Ari Sandel, the director of the high school comedy The DUFF and Netflx’s When We First Met, will be at the helm this time. The script comes from Rob Lieber, whose credits include Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day and episodes of The Goldbergs. Stay tuned for more details.
